Congratulations for being voted number one by Albany Herald.

"SYLVESTER — Cue the “Welcome Back Kotter” theme song.
“Welcome back, welcome back, welcome baaack!”

For the second consecutive week The Herald’s No. 1 team suffered a loss, meaning Worth County has returned to the top spot. The Rams (3-1) started as the inaugural No. 1 in the Herald’s Fab 5 poll and held onto the ranking for three weeks but fell out after a loss to Class AA No. 2 Fitzgerald on Sept. 12.

Now, after an idle week, the No. 1 ranking returns to the Peanut Capital of the World.

Last week’s No. 1 Westover came up short on their final drive to Crisp County in Region 1-AAA action to fall to No. 2. One week before, it was then No. 1 Bainbridge losing 17-0 to Region 1-AAAA foe Harris County.

Heading into a matchup against Class AAA No. 1 Cairo, Rams coach Harris Rainbow knows all too well the jinx that seemingly comes with the Herald’s No. 1 ranking.

“Last time we were there we went up against the No. 2 team in the state and lost,” Rainbow said with laugh. “You dropped us way down there. Now, we’re back and we have to go up against the No. 1 team in the state.”

Rounding out the Fab 5, Miller County (5-0) moves up to No. 3 after its third shutout of the season, GISA member Southland Academy (4-1) enters at No. 4 with a win against Mount de Sales Academy and Monroe (3-2) stays at No. 5 despite a loss to No. 1 Cairo.

Now, the Rams host the aforementioned Syrupmakers. The Syrupmakers (3-0) return eight players on offense and seven on defense from a team that came up just short in the fourth quarter of capturing a Class AAA state title. They have allowed only 13 points in three games this season.

“(Cairo) has the best offense I’ve ever seen in my 12 years of coaching,” Rainbow said. “Their defense is as good as any defense since I’ve been at Worth County.

“They’re scary.”

Still, as intimidating as Cairo sounds, Rainbow has confidence in his Wing-T offense with duel running threats Buster Jackson and Suderian Smith.

“It’s a monumental task to beat them but you never know in high school football,” Rainbow said. “It’s no secret this region is Cairo and then everybody else...” "
